This site is a symposium where we all can contribute our skills, knowledge, and experience. You are greatly appreciated for contributing, and you may continue to do so as a special guest.

We do not claim to know everything which is the biggest blessing for any scholar. To be a great teacher is to be an even greater student, so we must say thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your comments are indeed valuable to us.

If you know more people with your aptitude and passion encourage them to chime in. I know Q Ball loves fine art. He truly enjoyed your feedback.

Thanks!

Re: How To Make A Graff Denim Jacket

Seriously appreciate that you do not take offense at someone offering a tip. And that you write back to ask a question? I certainly was not expecting that at all. Happy to help-

"Scathe" (ripping) or crumble would occur if turpentine was used on top of rubber cement, since rubber cement is oil based.

It's fine to use a light coat of titanium white after the rubber cement. I would just say that the reason for cracking crumbling is because of the thickness of the amount of paint applied.

So it is good to avoid adding unnecessary layers of paint and to use as little paint as possible - as a general rule.

White paint (as a base coat) helps bright colors remain bright. But is really only necessary under light colored objects. So if you are working from an existing design you have planned out in advance - you really only need white under light or medium brilliance colors (red yellow
orange especially).

Often manufacturers don't add enough pigment to the acrylic (clear) medium. They do this to keep prices similar even though the cost of pigments varies wildly. Cheap yellow particularly. So the paint is translucent and you see the dark color underneath.

People compensate by using more paint - which is what leads to rigid paint, and cracking.

Re: How To Make A Graff Denim Jacket

Never thought about rubber cement! It was always the norm to use tiger or titanium white with some dilution so it will not cake up.

Although rubber cement is extremely flexible will it scathe more easily or even crumble? Just curious?

Really like the flexibility concept to the fabric from rubber cement. Thanks for the feedback!

Re: How To Make A Graff Denim Jacket

RE: Tips for Painting on Denim

IMPORTANT:
Use RUBBER CEMENT for your base coat before you start painting to keep the fabric pliable.

This is a tried and tested method that works. otherwise you will wind up with a surface that will be very hard and will crack over time.

Acrylic will adhere to the Rubber Cement well. Do NOT use GESSO or white acrylic/ or house paint for a base coat. Do not use oil paint. Fabric paint is garbage as you can't mix colors and get good secondary colors.

Hopefully it goes without saying you let the rubber cement dry first, before starting to paint. Two or three coats if you want to fill up all the fabric gaps and have a smoother textured surfice on which to paint.

May not be old school - but it is science that works.

Re: How To Make A Graff Denim Jacket

nice art pieces.. I think those would be best drawn on shirts and apparels only,, not on walls and floors of the streets.

Re: How To Make A Graff Denim Jacket

Mike, I went to Wigz site, and it appears he is not selling jackets anymore. Maybe you should email Wigz to see how you can get one from him.

There is an artist I found by the name of Matthew Tsang who has a portfolio online with some really tight graff writer jackets. http://www.matt-tsang.tv/gr...

His email is hello@matt-tsang.tv. Maybe he can hook you up. Also check these two links and network with some of the writers: http://www.at149st.com/inde... or http://www.12ozprophet.com/

I apologize if we do not offer graff denim jackets, but maybe we should in the near future.

Re: How To Make A Graff Denim Jacket

I would like to know how to get one of these jackets already painted. I grew up in NY during that era and went JFK high in the bronx. In fact I did graffiti on walls and trains as I grew up but now I do not hve the time to do this anymore. I really want to purchase a jacket with graffiti on it. Can you send me info on this? I went to Mr Wiggles link but it does not work. Please hook me up.
